The Burial Assistance Program is a ministry of Catholic Social Services to assist families with    limited resources in the final disposition of a family member who lived in Mecklenburg County. When Mecklenburg County discontinued funding to assist with indigent burials in 1994, Catholic Social Services convened with a group of concerned citizens, social work professionals, funeral home directors and the Director of the City Cemetery to develop a burial plan for Mecklenburg County residents.

Catholic Social Services provides the social service support and eligibility verification for the program without reimbursement for staff time or other costs incurred by the Agency.  The Agency has continued to administer the program since its inception with regular reporting to funding sources and undergoes a yearly audit. This program serves families that have no insurance, unable to negotiate financial arrangements with a funeral home and have less than the cost of the burial charged through the program. The deceased must have been a resident of Mecklenburg County.

Applicants are asked to contribute to the program as much of the cost as possible. Financial assistance is provided through charitable contributions of individuals, churches and other civic organizations when families are unable to cover the cost.

The greatest financial support comes from generous people in our community who come forward as matching-gifts donors. Usually these matching gifts are for a limited time and, therefore, new matching-gifts donors are welcomed throughout the year. CSS is also "growing" an endowment fund established in 2000, to help address the long term financial needs of the Burial Assistance Program.
