 Burial Assistance Program

The Burial Assistance Program is a ministry of Catholic Social Services to assist families with limited resources to bury a family member. In 1994, Mecklenburg County discontinued funding for indigent burials.Catholic Social Services convened a group of concerned citizens, social work staff, funeral home directors and the Director of the City Cemetery to develop a burial plan for Mecklenburg County residents. This program serves families who have no insurance, limited resources and are unable to negotiate financial arrangements with a funeral home.

Catholic Social Services provides the social service support and eligibility verification for the program without administrative fees. The Agency has continued to administer the program since its inception with regular reporting to funding sources and is part of the Agency annual audit.

After thirteen years and assisting over 500 families, the Burial Assistance Program, beginning July 1, 2009, is incurring a price increase from $600 to $1100 a burial.

How is the Burial Assistance Program Funded?

Applicants are asked to contribute to the program as much of the cost as possible. Financial assistance is provided through charitable contributions of individuals, churches and other civic organizations when families are unable to cover the cost.

The greatest financial support comes from generous people in our community who come forward as matching-gifts donors. Usually these matching gifts are for a limited time and, therefore, new matching-gifts donors are welcomed throughout the year. CSS is also "growing" an endowment fund established in 2000, to help address the long term financial needs of the Burial Assistance Program.

John 19:40-42

The Burial of Jesus

Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Just as Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus prepared Jesus' body for burial, we too, as Christians, must prepare to bury God's children who are in need.
