The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic Bishops.  Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in the United States through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and through transformative education.

For more than thirty years, CCHD has funded some 4,000 programs across the United States through efforts that cross racial and religious boundaries—all to help people find a way out of poverty for a lifetime.

CCHD supports local groups as they create jobs, improve neighborhoods, train adults for employment at a living wage, keep schools safe and enriching for children, and raise leaders for the future.

Every November, dioceses throughout the USA conduct a CCHD collection.  (The 2009 collection will take place the weekend of November 21st and 22nd).  All funds sent to the national office are used solely for the support of CCHD’s anti-poverty mission.  Grant procedures and applications for national grants are available on the web at www.usccb.org/cchd/, then click on “Grants”.

A smaller portion of the November diocesan collection remains in the diocese to support local grants for grassroots organizations.

Poverty in America is on the rise.  But we can reverse that trend, by rekindling the spirit of community with those in need — and joining in solidarity with all Americans to break the cycle of poverty forever.  We can end it.  And everyone can do something to help.  Visit www.povertyusa.org to learn more about the wide array of effective steps that can be taken toward ending poverty.

Established in 1943, CRS is the official overseas relief and development agency of the Roman Catholic Church in the U.S.A. Using 92% of its operating budget for programs that alleviate suffering worldwide, CRS fosters both charity and justice. Through ORB, Work of Human Hands, and Food Fast the diocesan CRS program raises awareness of the inequities of our world and the daily struggle for survival by so much of humanity. Contributions to these programs support CRS operations in over 90 countries. The people of the Diocese of Charlotte also generously respond to special CRS appeals for disaster assistance for such calamities as earthquakes, floods and famines.

In the Diocese of Charlotte the primary CRS activity is Operation Rice Bowl, taking place during Lent in parishes and schools. Through ORB, participants reach out in solidarity on a global level through activities that promote prayer, fasting, learning and giving. A portion of the funds raised by the ORB collection remains in the diocese to be awarded during a fall round of mini-grants to diocesan entities sponsoring local initiatives on poverty and hunger alleviation.
The national CRS Website is: www.crs.org.
