Public Policy & Legislative Work
Through educational events and mailings, underpinned by Catholic Social Teaching, the Office of Justice and Peace offers resources to help Catholics in the Diocese of Charlotte be a voice in public policy matters. Such resources are often issued in conjunction with campaigns and alerts from our bishop as well as from various Catholic entities. The Office of Justice and Peace follows the mission of Catholic Social Services to be a ministry of "charity, service, and justice."
A new public policy and advocacy tool in the Diocese of Charlotte is Catholic Voice NC (CVNC), established by the Bishops of Charlotte and Raleigh in July 2008. CVNC offers North Carolina's Catholics an opportunity to have a greater voice in the political process, especially in legislative matters under consideration by the General Assembly in Raleigh. The Office of Justice and Peace provides advice to CVNC through participation of its staff on the CVNC Advisory Board.
As Internet technology has developed and associated costs have fallen in recent years, almost all national Catholic organizations today host their own advocacy alert email systems. The Office of Justice and Peace encourages Catholics who wish to receive advocacy alerts to sign up with the email legislative alert systems presented here. Web links to sign up for the email legislative alert networks are presented in the box at right.

The Church Calls for Faithful Citizenship
It is commendable that in today's democratic societies, in a climate of true freedom, everyone is made a participant in directing the body politic. Such societies call for new and fuller forms of participation in public life by Christian and non-Christian citizens alike. Indeed, all can contribute, by voting in elections for lawmakers and government official, and in other ways as well, to the development of political solutions and legislative choices which, in their opinion, will benefit the common good. The life of a democracy could not be productive without the active, responsible and generous involvement of everyone, albeit in a diversity and complementarity of forms, levels, tasks, and responsibilities.
